Commercial Paper Shredders
Get Ready For Heavy Duty Shredding...

Commercial paper shredders are the heaviest duty of all paper shredders currently available.

They are designed to accommodate the shredding needs of entire departments or office floors within an organization.

Many can handle up to 140 sheets of paper at once and make shredding large volumes of documents simple and efficient.

Due to the nature of their work, commercial paper shredders are capable of shredding, not only documents, but also paperclips and staples that are often left in large bundles of paperwork.

This can reduce the amount of time and effort needed to prepare the documents for shredding drastically and ensure that every item is shredded correctly without jamming the machine.

An industrial paper shredder will also have a reverse feed function to enable any jams that do occur to be corrected quickly and not slow the shredding process greatly.

Security Levels Of Commercial Paper Shredders

The level of shredding that an industrial paper shredder employs is governed by its DIN number. Here is an explanation of the different sizes of shredding produced by an office paper shredder of each level:

Security Level 1
An office paper shredder with DIN 1 is designed for shredding general records, internal documents, and documents that need to be illegible after they expire.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 3/8” x 1 1/2-3 1/8” Cross Cut
  • Approximately 3/8” Strip Cut
  • METRIC (10.5mm Strip Cut)
  • (11.8mm Strip Cut)
  • (10.5mm x 40-80mm Cross Cut)
Security Level 2
A desktop paper shredder with DIN 2 is designed for the shredding of internal and in-house documents. This is especially for shredding documents such as computer printouts or poor quality photocopies.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 1/8” Strip Cut
  • Approximately 1/4” Strip Cut
  • Approximately 1/2” x 9/16-2” Cross Cut
  • Approximately 1/4” x 9/16-2” Cross Cut
  • METRIC (3.9mm Strip Cut)
  • (5.8mm Strip Cut)
  • (7.5mm x 40-80mm)
Security Level 3
An office paper shredder with DIN 3 is designed for shredding confidential documents and personal data.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 1/16” Strip Cut
  • Approximately 1/8” x 1 1/8-2” Cross Cut
  • METRIC (1.9mm Strip Cut)
  • (3.9mm x 30-50mm Cross Cut)
Security Level 4
A desktop paper shredder with DIN 4 is designed for shredding secret documents and more sensitive information. It can be used by companies to shred confidential documents.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 1/6” x 9/16-5/8” Cross Cut
  • METRIC (1.9mm x 15mm Cross Cut)
Security Level 5
A paper shredder with DIN 5 has been designed and approved by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Canadian R.C.M.P. for top secret shredding. It is ideal for high-security requirements.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 1/32” x 3/8-1/2” Cross Cut
  • METRIC (0.78mm x 11mm Cross Cut)
Security Level 6
A desktop paper shredder is unlikely to have a DIN 6 as it is the highest level of shredder security currently available. It is backed by the U.S. government and the NSA for ultra secure shredding for the most sensitive documents.
  • STANDARD MEASUREMENT Approximately 1/32” x 5/32” Cross Cut
  • Approximately 1/26” x 1/5” Cross Cut
  • METRIC (1mm x 4-5mm)
The legal implications of not destroying confidential employee and customer records adequately have led to a huge increase in the number of shredders available and a commercial paper shredder is likely to be able to deal with far more than just paperwork.

Many companies need to dispose of large volumes of other items, such as CD-ROMs, floppy disks, credit cards, identity cards and other non-paper products. Commercial paper shredders are available that can cope with any type of item.

For very high volumes of items, conveyer belts and other feeders are incorporated into the shredder for speed and safety of the operator. They can simply empty a box of items onto the belt and let the machine take care of the rest.

A company may want to buy an industrial paper shredder that can deal with the destruction of all items, or use one for each specific type, for example paper, cardboard and plastic.

Due to the complexity of these commercial paper shredders there will be a need for maintenance. Regular oiling is essential for ensuring that the equipment continues to run smoothly. The majority of major manufacturers will offer support contracts as part of an industrial paper shredder purchase.

It is highly advisable that you take this as repairs can be extremely expensive and leave you without a commercial paper shredder while they are being carried out.

Adequate waste removal measures should also be undertaken to ensure that the output from your commercial paper shredder is disposed of correctly.
